I found the most essential thing in life
The citizens of ancient Syracuse would have recognized the man who is said to have bustled past them naked and
dripping and shouting, “Eureka!” (I have found it!). It was Archimedes, celebrated mathematician, scientist, inventor, and confidant of the king. I almost went about oblivious of my environment when I discovered this too!
I have just discovered the most important thing in life. Once you have it, your soul experiences lasting peace and joy. Lasting peace and joy is not found in the most benevolent lifestyle. True rest is found by discovering what I just discovered.
The most important thing in life is to be able to distinguish between the soul and the spirit, to be able to distinguish between one’s heart and one’s mind and to know the difference between feelings and emotions. There is a thing line between the soul and the spirit. It is so difficult to conceive the fact that what is going on in the mind might not be the same as in the heart. Can anyone tell me the distinction between their feelings and their emotions? Not being able to make the differences when it is needed is the major cause of confusion, restlessness and terror in our world.
Many a people have been taught philosophies that teach them to hurt fellow human beings. They do this as a law or a necessity but the more they engage in these acts, the more miserable they become. They however feel that their miserableness is because they have not done well enough, thus they continue to do more wickedly and feel more miserable because they have been taught something contrary to their hearts!
We spend billions of money to educate people. It is believed that training their minds will make them better people. Alas!, this individuals become more depraved day by day because training the mind does not change the hearts of men. The heart cannot be trained. It is an entity that can only be transformed or changed. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 1” Often times, a man is not even aware of how wicked he is until a situation brings it out of him. What a man needs is a change of heart and not just a training of his mind.
A man needs to know the difference between thoughts and intuition. Thoughts are of the mind in the realm of the soul, intuition is from the spirit of man. Walking by intuition has saved many lives. Intuition needs no explanation; it is an inner knowing that makes a man to take a right step in the right direction before asking questions.
Man needs to know the difference between knowledge and perception. Knowledge is the reception of information with the mind (brain) but perception is of the spirit. Science asks for evidence, perception knows but cannot explain why. Ultimately, perception is proven right. Many a people who walked by perception were crucified by those who required proof only to discover the truth afterwards. No wonder the world keeps going round in circles.
Paul stood up in their midst and said, “Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with much hurt and much damage, not only of the ship, but also of our lives”. The captain and the centurion refused to believe him. By their calculation, all was fine. At the end, they lost everything. They almost lost their lives too if not that they finally respected perception of the spirit against the ‘mental knowing’ of the trained soul.2
Are you aware that your feelings are not necessarily your emotions? Are you aware that when your feelings determine your emotions, it is like the tail wagging the dog? Things you would not naturally do because it feels painful initially, you end up doing with painstaking endurance when an ample reward is offered for it. Later you discovered you actually enjoyed doing the initially supposedly ‘painful’ thing. Why did the accompanying emotion change? It changed because the interpretation you gave to the event produced a new set of emotions that despised the feelings from your senses. The fact that it does not feel good or taste good does not mean that it is bad for you. The fact that it tastes sweet and makes you feel good initially does not mean it is ultimately good for you. Your feelings do not necessarily dictate your emotions except you allow it!
So, what is the lesson learnt?
- You need a right heart. If necessary, a change of heart. “Create in me a clean heart o Lord and renew a right spirit within me” –David3
- You must learn the way of your spirit: listening to your heart, going by intuition and perception. Those who learn to follow their heart (a good heart), overcome in life.
- You can determine how to feel. Your feelings do not dictate to you. Feel good about what is good and choose to feel bad about what is bad no matter what your head or feelings are saying. Otherwise you become a victim of your feelings. That is a bad state to be and that is the state of most men in this generation.
The combination of a wicked heart, wrong imagination and tipsy emotion is the bane of our educated but emotionally immature generation of people in our present world!
WHAT MAKES ALL THESE POSSIBLE?
Only the living word of God divides and makes a distinction between the spirit and the soul of man. No science on earth, no religion on earth, neither philosophy nor psychology has been to elucidate completely the entity called the spirit of man and distinguish it from the soul of man. At that depth it gets confusing. Trying to get another to show you makes it worse. You must of your own self sit down with the word of God and with an open mind, search through it for answers. As you do so, light comes in, penetrates through the darkness of the soul and shines a light that lightens up your spirit man. At that point, you realize that distinction. Your spirit man is liberated and you can now walk in that light to fulfill your ultimate purpose and destiny. The word of God is the most important thing on the earth. It divides asunder the soul and the spirit!
“For the world of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit….and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”4
- Jeremiah 17:9
- Acts of the Apostles 27:10-44
- Psalms of David 51:10
- Hebrews 4:12
