Recharge that Battery

The battery we fail to charge.

I recently discovered that we are all fitted with a battery to ensure we remain human. That battery is our conscience. There was a depot of the consciousness of good and evil in each one of us at birth. Our manufacturer placed it in us to ensure that deep in our subconscious and except by the act of the will or a strong external force, we remain human with capacity to show empathy and execute fairness and justice.

As we grow up, we have the capacity to wear down this battery (like every normal battery). What keeps the battery charged is the truth. What wears it out is continuous injustice and lies. What maintains this battery when charged and from automatically running down is a strong family unit or community with great values. How good is your battery? Is it properly charged? Can we hope for a great future for a world filled with fairness, justice, and kindness with your kind of battery (conscience)?

In other words, we can run like a robot based on the state of our conscience. You can engage in so much good naturally with little capacity to do evil. At the same time you can engage continuously in so much wickedness without feeling guilt all based on the state of your conscience. If you keep your conscience tender by feeding on the truth and you were brought up with great values, what a wonderful person you are. If you grew up with wrong values or you drifted away from the truth, with time, you will realize that life can be messy and empty, and without joy or purpose.

TRUTH and WISDOM

There is truth. Certain things in life are established and plain and written in black and white except we decide to muddle them up through selfishness and strife. The truth is in our hearts and is also written in the word of God -the Bible. When we give attention to what is written in the scriptures, it resonates with the truth which is in our hearts and when we follow our conscience based on the knowledge of the truth, life is full of joy and peace.

Wisdom is listening to our hearts based on the truth and walking in obedience even when our reasoning is selfishly going in another direction.

Lies and Folly

Our conscience can be unplugged and packed up ever before we grew up, if we are fed with lies. There are so many false ideologies around us. Adults who have chosen the ways of wickedness and selfishness have developed ways to destroy our conscience from childhood. When we are fed with lies and we imbibe such lies from childhood, we become abnormal.

An example is the idea that “if it feels good, then it is good”. Our feelings are a product of past experiences and our assumptions. Feelings can be sensors or thermometers, they give signals but they are no control buttons. We do not follow our feelings, rather we are to determine what to do with the messages they send to us. No training feels good at the beginning but in the end, there is a reward. No healthy habit or lifestyle is attractive but in the end, it pays with good health. Our lives become a mess when we do things only because they feel good.

How good is your battery? How sound is your sense of justice and fairness? How sensitive and tender is your conscience? Is your conscience seared with a hot iron? Has it been silenced and drowned in the noise of your activities? Is your battery charged?

It is time to recharge that battery so we can remain humane.

“So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.” Acts 24:16
