I sought wisdom as I walked along the path of life. All around me, men who seemed to be wise in their own chosen path were applauded by others. The pursuit of wisdom seemed to be the ultimate and I gathered all the wisdom nuggets I could get until one day, I came across the only wise God. If he was the only wise God, then who was I? I either acknowledged him as the only wise God or claim to be wise in my own eyes. If he was the only wise God, what iota of wisdom was left for me to claim?
“Now unto the King eternal immortal invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen”
1 Timothy 1:17
Then, he told me not to lean on my own understanding but to trust him with all my heart. That was difficult as oftentimes I’d still go my own way until he instructed me to acknowledge him in all my ways and expect him to direct my path. Compared to him, what wisdom remained in me? None! Therefore, I chose to be foolish in my own eyes for he had told me ‘not to be wise in my own eyes’ but rather to desist from all my schemes.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Proverbs 3:5-7
The problem was this; I had some tricks up my sleeves too. I could get myself out of trouble many times such that I did not need him ‘all the time’. I continued to struggle until I made a mess of things. I saw the smarter ones get into a web they could not wriggle out of and realized that the big ones were a lie. God made the wise foolish and turned diviners mad. He made them grope in daylight as if in darkness. I didn’t want that to be my lot therefore relative to him, I quickly placed myself among the foolish. I chose to learn wisdom from him.
That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;
Isaiah 44:25
When I realized that the battle was not for the strong neither the race for the swift and that the wise do not always have bread nor the men of understanding favor, I stopped struggling. Instead, I decided to cling to the one who had power over time and chance. I understood that life was a matter of time and chance.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.
Ecclesiastes 9:11
When I realized without any doubt all the wisdom and intelligence of this world, all the discoveries of science, and the wonders of technology meant nothing compared to the knowledge of the highest, I lost steam. In the heat of my pursuit, I wondered at myself and asked, ‘What exactly am I pursuing?’. That was when I decided to count it all as nothing compared to the knowledge of Christ my king.
Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
Jeremiah 9:23-24
The decision to be foolish by the standard and the criteria of this world made me be laughed at and I was scorned. Yes, my allies thought me to be stupid and walked away. Just then, he came near and swore, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
Psalms 32:8
Afterward, he gave me the tongue of the learned that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary. Now he wakes me up every morning to hear as the learned for the meek, he will teach his way.
“The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”
Isaiah 50:4
Compared to the only wise God, how wise are you? Those who think they are wise, they keep running around in circles. The things they held in high esteem yesterday, they came back to tell us to forget them for they have discovered new things. I bet they will come back tomorrow to inform us that the things of old are wiser than now. I’d rather embrace the wisdom of God than to seek to prove myself wise.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
1 Corinthians 3: 19, 1:19
I chose to be foolish because the seeming foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of men.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence.
1Corinthians 1:25-29
