Life is a double-edged sword

Life is a double-edged sword

In life, what can make you can mar you. Diamonds and coal are essentially the same, both are made up of carbon. What makes the difference is the process the carbon molecules passed through before the final product surfaced. In every bad person is a lot of good which never manifested and in every good man is a lot of evil hidden and buried. You either choose one or the other. Sometimes that choice is not yours to make but most times you can choose.

Afred Nobel

Alfred Nobel invented Dynamite which became a very useful tool for miners. The invention transformed the industrial world at that time making it easier to mine ores such as gold, coal, diamond etc. However, the discovery of dynamite lead to other inventions which made bombs readily available for large scale conflicts worldwide. The same invention which was beneficial brought more deaths than ever before such that Alfred was quoted to have become “the merchant of death”. Alfred was lucky as he was able to “rewrite his own obituary” by setting up the Nobel prizes before his death.

The internet surfaced as a tool which began to be used for improved communication between military formations and educational institutions. Later, the internet was expanded and almost anywhere in our world could be connected in an instant. This has turned the whole globe into a global village. However, as good as the internet is, it has become a tool for cybercrime, a means of political interference between nations and sometimes an outright instrument for crime.

These and more examples clearly prove that life is a double-edged sword. As it cuts in one direction it can also cut in the opposite direction. Many things in life meant for good have produced much eviler than envisaged. Sons born to perpetuate a kingdom have turned around to destroy it. Relationships which started well have gone sour. It seems as if many things in life assume the nature of the person who takes charge of it. A gun can either be used for a defense,to fight for a good cause or may be used to kill the innocent. What the gun can do is largely achieved by the one who handles it. Same goes for money. Money is amoral, it literally takes over the nature of its owner. A $100-dollar note may ruin or save a life, it all depends on who has power over it.

If life is a double edged sword, what then do we do as individuals? The best thing to do with a double edged sword is to be the one holding it. In other words, the real people who determine the direction our world is going are those who have taken responsibility for determining how they want it to run. If they have good intentions, things go right and if they have wrong intentions, things go wrong. Every other person may find themselves on either side of the sword and God bless you if the sword is being moved in your direction.

What do you have to do? Simply make sure you are ready to take responsibility for whatever happens in your life. Become accountable to yourself. Teach your children from a tender age never to blame others nor their environment for whatever happens to them. In every situation, we must first evaluate our roles and determine if we could have done things differently. Taking responsibility is not about the game of blame nor is it about fixing faults on someone else. It is about learning the lesson that will make the next result better. If we create a generation of individuals who feel they have a right to every good thing of life, and will not take responsibilities for their acts but blame others when things go wrong, such a generation will become tools in the hands of spoilers. They will become a burden we are not ready to bear.

You as an individual must realize that life ultimately is what you make it. That it is not only about our location, people around us nor the government but we who must be ready to take charge in our own way. If you do not, you will be subject to the result of the decisions of others and that could affect you either positively or negatively. There is so much good in you, the whole world needs that good to come forth but it is much easier to let evil out than good. Good takes a lot of work, you’ll require knowledge and training, but it will be worth it. Be the one holding that sword!

The best part is the handle. Take responsibility, take charge and be accountable for your life’s decisions.
